The Project

A recreational core designed to serve far more than recreation.

Paper Plane Architecture designed this 16,000-square-foot, two-story multipurpose facility around a full-size high school regulation basketball court. The court forms the active heart of the building, with flexible multipurpose rooms, worship support, administration, kitchen, restrooms and building support spaces organized around it to create a facility that can serve the church and community throughout the week.

Our Approach

Design begins with better decisions.

Supporting the client. Our role went beyond arranging rooms. We focused on giving the client clear information at the right moments so that program, priorities and design decisions could be evaluated with confidence before the project moved forward.

Designing for people and activity. Our understanding of active and passive recreation informed how the building, circulation and support spaces work together. The design is tailored to the client's needs, the conditions of the property and the character of the community it will serve.

Planning the Program

Everything organized around the court.

The first level places the athletic and worship floor at the center, with a stage, kitchen, multipurpose rooms, offices, conference space, restrooms and support functions around the perimeter. The second level continues the flexible program around the volume of the court, allowing the central space to remain open and visually connected while maximizing usable program area around it.

Clear Center The regulation court establishes an unmistakable heart for recreation, worship and large gatherings.
Flexible Edge Multipurpose rooms around the perimeter can support education, fellowship, meetings and changing community needs.
Built for the Next Phase The concept gives the client a clear framework for moving from planning into the next stage of the project.
