Project Story

A stronger identity for worship and community.

Paper Plane Architecture developed a schematic design study for Hollywood Baptist Church to explore how the congregation’s campus could evolve into a more welcoming, recognizable, and functional place of worship.

The concept joined the new sanctuary, arrival sequence, landscape, parking, and existing support spaces into one architectural experience — giving the Owner a clear picture of both the project’s potential and the level of investment it would require.

01 — ARRIVAL

A front door with presence.

A covered arrival canopy extends the church toward the parking field and establishes a clear, welcoming point of entry. The composition combines brick masonry, a strong central gable, tall pointed windows, and a steeple to create a recognizable civic and spiritual presence.

The language is intentionally familiar without being literal — traditional ecclesiastical forms are simplified into a cleaner contemporary expression.

Design Principle

One campus, not an addition. Worship, arrival, landscape, circulation and identity were studied together.

02 — WORSHIP

Worship at the center.

The sanctuary concept was organized around clear sightlines, straightforward movement, accessible seating, and a focused relationship between the congregation and the platform. The study also tested the relationship of the sanctuary to the foyer, restrooms, circulation, and existing support spaces.

03 — PROGRAM

The plan made the project measurable.

The schematic plan translated the congregation’s goals into a coordinated spatial framework so the Owner could evaluate program, scale, circulation, and cost before advancing into detailed design.

Project Status

Design clarity before construction commitment.

During schematic design, the projected construction investment exceeded the congregation’s available budget. The Owner elected not to advance the project into subsequent design phases.

The study still fulfilled an essential role: it allowed the congregation to test the program, understand the architectural opportunity, and make an informed decision before committing additional resources.
