The project

A brand-standard extended-stay hotel, tuned to its Michigan site.

Paper Plane Architecture is designing a new Home2 Suites by Hilton in Independence, Michigan — a four-story, extended-stay hotel that adapts Hilton's Home2 prototype to a specific site and program. The building places guest floors above a ground level of shared amenities, with an entry canopy, outdoor gathering patio, and landscaped parking wrapping a water-adjacent parcel.

The design carries the Home2 brand identity — its signage, massing rhythm, and material palette of light stucco, warm stone, and charcoal accents — while resolving the site planning, code, accessibility, and construction detailing needed to build it. The project has reached 90% construction documents and has secured Hilton brand approval; it now awaits final owner and municipal approvals.

The approach

Prototype discipline, site-specific execution.

Extended-stay guests settle in for longer visits, so the ground floor does the heavy lifting: lobby and gathering areas, a market and breakfast servery, fitness, an indoor pool, guest laundry, and a meeting room, all arranged around the arrival sequence. The upper floors stack an efficient, repeatable mix of king studios, queen/queen studios, and one-bedroom suites along a single double-loaded corridor.

Working within Hilton's Home2 standards, our role is to make the prototype real on this parcel — coordinating site access and parking, accessibility, life-safety and egress, structure, and envelope so the building can move cleanly from documents into construction once approvals land.

What it demonstrates

Brand hospitality, delivered site by site.

Home2 Suites — Independence shows Paper Plane Architecture's ability to take a national hospitality brand's prototype and carry it through design, brand approval, and full construction documentation on a real, constrained site.

It reflects the coordination hospitality work demands: brand-standard guest experience, an efficient repeatable room floor, a complete ground-floor amenity program, accessible design, and site planning that satisfies both the operator and the municipality.
