A dedicated workplace for bus operators between routes — designed for arrival, recovery, communication, meals and day-to-day staff support.
This Bronx facility was planned for MTA bus drivers who need a reliable place to clock in, take a break between routes, catch up on email, eat lunch and use restroom facilities during the day.
Rather than over-design the room, Paper Plane Architecture focused on the infrastructure that mattered most: a private point of entry, clear egress, a flexible open room, accessible support spaces and durable finishes that could accommodate the agency’s own furniture and equipment after completion.
Not every public project needs spectacle. Some need to work — clearly, safely and every day.
The value of the project is in making a simple staff program function cleanly within an existing building while preserving agency flexibility for future use.
The primary open room was intentionally kept visually quiet and adaptable so the agency could retrofit its own tables, chairs, lockers and equipment. The architecture establishes the durable shell; MTA controls the day-to-day setup.
The project required a private entrance and exit serving the MTA space. That intervention gives staff a clear arrival point while separating the support facility from surrounding building functions.
Restroom, wash-up and utility components were treated as core workplace infrastructure. Accessible clearances, robust materials and straightforward detailing support repeated daily use without competing with the flexibility of the main room.
For this project, success was not defined by filling the room with design gestures. It was defined by creating the right framework for an agency workforce: private access, reliable support spaces, straightforward circulation and a flexible field that MTA could furnish around evolving needs.
